EU Wants to Impose Tariffs on Chinese EV Imports, Germany Objects

TapTechNews June 17th news, recently, the European Commission publicly announced its intention to impose high tariffs on imports of Chinese electric vehicles. However, it seems that the German political and business communities do not support the move of the European Commission.

According to a report by CaiLianShe today, the German Chamber of Commerce believes that this measure can be described as hurting others without benefiting oneself - not only unable to improve the competitiveness of the German local automotive industry, but will instead bring uncertainty impacts to the European economy.

Maximilian Butek, the Executive Director East China of the German Chamber of Commerce, said at the press conference of the chamber's business confidence survey that the tariffs currently proposed by the EU will not improve the competitiveness of the automotive industry. Given that the automotive industry is spread all over the world, you cannot protect the automotive industry only within the EU.

Maximilian Butek said that before the EU launched an anti-subsidy investigation, German companies had never complained about China's subsidies in the field of electric vehicles. Our (members') companies are unanimous on this point, that is, only when they become more competitive, they can survive.

And according to a previous report by TapTechNews, there was recently foreign media news that the German government is trying hard to prevent the decision of the EU to impose new tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles from taking effect, or at least soften the above decision if it cannot be stopped.

The German side believes that there is still room for an agreement with China before the tariff takes effect on July 4. One of the informed people said that German officials see leeway and believe they have allies within the EU and emphasized that not only China, but also the EU must take action to reach an agreement.
