Analysis of Differences in Paid Volume on Apple/Android Platforms

TapTechNews June 9th news, analytics firm SensorTower disclosed the Q1 paid volume report on Apple/Android platforms today, claiming that there are "significant differences" in consumer habits between Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store.

TapTechNews learned from the analytical agency data that although the total number of app downloads in the Google Play Store (25.5 billion times) far exceeded the 8.4 billion times in the Apple App Store, Apple's revenue in the first quarter of 2024 was $24.6 billion (TapTechNews note: currently about 178.452 billion yuan), which was "nearly twice" the $11.2 billion (currently about 81.246 billion yuan) revenue of Google in the same period.

In addition to the "Apple tax" commission itself, SensorTower also believes that there are key differences in the "user behavior" and "app itself" of the relevant platforms. This is because the "users' own payment habits on each platform are different", and the distribution channels of Android apps are more extensive, so the number of people willing to pay for apps is diluted.

SensorTower also said that compared with the Google Play Store, the number of apps that adopt subscription-based services in the Apple App Store is more, and with the app distribution mechanism of the App Store, it is easier for such app developers to receive continuous payments from users.

In addition, SensorTower said that regardless of the Apple or Android platforms, users spend the most money on game apps, but compared with users on the Apple platform, Android users spend more money on games. This indicates that there are more game apps on the relevant platforms and they are also more profitable.
