GameStop Ventures into New Business Buying and Selling Rare Pokémon Trading Cards

TapTechNews, May 11 reports that GameStop recently informed the media of its upcoming new service to launch next week, which involves buying and selling rare Pokémon trading cards and other valuable collectible cards.

GameStop will purchase cards rated 8, 9, or 10 by PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator), a company that grades sports and trading cards. However, the service does not support cards valued over 500 USD.

Sources indicate that GameStop has partnered with PSA for this service, although GameStop will not offer grading services in-store nor assist with mailing cards for grading. Nevertheless, GameStop will accept PSA-graded non-Pokémon cards as well.

Following the cooldown of the retail trader vs. Wall Street saga, GameStop continues to face challenges such as layoffs and revenues falling short of expectations. Its Q4 revenue was 1.79 billion USD, which is below the anticipated 2.05 billion USD and last year's 2.23 billion USD.

Facing impacts from digital game sales, GameStop is implementing cost-cutting measures and downsizing operations. The company has ceased operations in Ireland, Switzerland, and Austria, and has been reducing its workforce.

According to Reuters, as of February 3, GameStop employs about 8,000 full-time and 13,000 to 18,000 part-time employees worldwide. In 2023, the company had 11,000 full-time employees and 14,000 to 27,000 part-time employees.
