China's First Ship with Retrofitted Methanol Dual-Fuel Engine Completes Sea Trial Successfully

TapTechNews September 22nd news, according to the information from the Zhejiang Provincial Port and Shipping Administration Center, recently, the domestic first ship with its existing main engine retrofitted to a methanol dual-fuel engine ship, the Leading 1 wheel, successfully completed its sea trial in the Zhoushan sea area. The sea trial results show that the various indicators of the methanol dual-fuel engine of the Leading 1 wheel meet the design requirements.

The Leading 1 wheel conducted a 6-hour navigation test at sea this time, mainly testing the operating parameters, fuel consumption, output power and ship speed of the methanol dual-fuel engine under various working conditions, and at the same time verifying and adjusting the newly added nitrogen system, foam system, pressure water mist system, etc. in this retrofit, and the results of various tests conform to the design standards.

TapTechNews noticed that the current global shipping industry is vigorously promoting the alternative application of new green fuels. As a normal temperature liquid fuel, methanol is more secure compared to LNG, ammonia, hydrogen, etc., and has become the development direction of new green fuels in the shipping industry in the future.

The Hangzhou-registered ship, the Leading 1 wheel, under the guidance of the Zhejiang Provincial Ship Inspection Center and with the joint participation of the Zhoushan Ship Inspection and the Hangzhou Ship Inspection, took the lead in testing the methanol dual-fuel retrofit work of the active service ship's main engine, and the China Classification Society issued the first main engine product certificate for the retrofit of the active service ship's main engine to a methanol dual-fuel engine.

In addition to the main engine retrofit, the main core technologies of this project include the newly added methanol fuel tank and filling station system, methanol fuel supply system, methanol fuel monitoring system, alarm and safety protection system, etc.

According to the calculation, after the retrofit, the Leading 1 wheel can save about 1/4 of the fuel cost and can reduce the carbon emission by about 11.25%, and can significantly reduce pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, sulfides, and particulate matter, so that the ship has been greatly improved in both operational economy and environmental protection emission indicators. The person in charge of the Leading 1 ship said.
