Breakthrough in Superconductivity Fudan University Team Grows High-Quality Nickel Oxide Single-Crystals

TapTechNews July 18th news, the team led by Zhao Jun from the Department of Physics at Fudan University successfully grew high-quality single-crystal samples of the three-layer nickel oxide La4Ni3O10 using high-pressure optical floating zone technology, confirming the presence of pressure-induced bulk superconductivity (bulk superconductivity) in nickel oxides, and its superconducting volume fraction reached 86%.

Superconductors refer to materials with zero resistance and complete diamagnetism below a specific transition temperature, which can be widely used in power transmission and energy storage, medical imaging, maglev trains, quantum computing and other fields, and have important scientific research and technical application values. So far, 10 scientists have won the Nobel Prize for superconducting research.

The search for new high-temperature superconductors is the goal that the scientific community has been pursuing. Zhao Jun's team successfully synthesized high-quality single-crystal samples of the three-layer nickel oxide La4Ni3O10. The samples showed zero resistance and the Meissner effect of complete diamagnetism at below the superconducting critical temperature, and the superconducting volume fraction reached 86%, proving the bulk superconducting properties of nickel oxides.

Zhao Jun said: This superconducting volume fraction is close to that of copper oxide high-temperature superconductors, undoubtedly confirming the bulk superconductivity of nickel oxides.
